Chief Directorate Geography
Geo referenced Dwelling Frame
- Stats SA has embarked on a project to develop a national geo referenced dwelling frame for the whole of South Africa.
The objective of the dwelling frame is
- To locate every dwelling spatially;
- To collect associated attributes information about each dwelling unit;
- To continuously maintain such a frame.
- The model is based on assigning a spatial point to every land parcel (cadastral system) in urban areas. Tables (attributes) are linked for each point, which provides information on the street address, suburb and the number of units per land parcel in cases of high-rise buildings. In traditional areas, a dwelling number and village name are allocated per homestead. In informal areas a dwelling number and locality are assigned to a structure while the farm and district names are allocated to the land parcel in farm settlements.
Geographical Methodology and Standards
- Boundary adjustments: Enumerator Areas from various censuses are linked to new Municipal or Provincial areas in order to recalculate census statistics to reflect the status as per current boundaries.
- Enumerator Area Maintenance: Re-demarcation of the previous census’s EAs according to specifications
- Place Name Database: A national database on two levels that is area based, generated from various sources. It includes un-official names and alternative names
Geographic Support and Services
- Social Stats Support: Support to surveys in terms of planning, the sample frame, up-to-date orientation maps and identification of visiting points.
- Economic Stats Support: Support to surveys in terms of geo-coding of businesses for sampling purposes, up-to-date orientation maps and evaluation of the accuracy of reported business data on municipal level.
- User Support: Dissemination of spatial data and assistance to spatial data users, externally and internally. (Digital or hardcopy tables and maps)

Census Support
- CS (Including Community Survey): Support in terms of field operations with regards to Census/CS preparation - field capturing of additional information for demarcation as well as quality assurance.
Geo-database and Application Development
- The geodatabase section forms the backbone for GIS operations in support of other sections within the Geography Division. GIS implementation and maintenance are the main focus areas and includes responsibilities such as spatial data collection, maintenance of an operational GIS and the development and implementation of GIS applications.
