Census Atlas 2001
The Census Atlas was the primary geographically based product used for purposes
of disseminating Census 2001 data.
The product was developed to serve the need of decision makers, managers and
educators at all levels for the Census 2001 data. It furthermore had to be
accessible to the general public i.e. inherent ease of use, low cost and not
requiring specialized software.
What made this product unique at the time of release was that although it was a
spatially based application with interactive functionality, users did not need
a GIS to view the information. This product is hosted on a CD which starts up
automatically and contains pre prepared graphs, maps and tables per census
variables at three geographical levels namely national, provincial and
municipal.
Hosting it on a CD ensured that users with no internet access could access the
product. It not only gave the user access to the census data, but also the
ability to use pre-prepared maps graphs and tables for specific census data for
their own purposes without having to execute complex GIS based thematic
mapping.
It was originally released in June of 3003 and was distributed by Statistical
information services at the national census data releases in the provinces and
since then continuously to a variety of users.
A Census Atlas based on more current technology is planned for the release of
Census 2011 data.
